Basics

So you want to begin Canyoneering?

Realize that it is a dangerous sport.  Get trained, or go with someone that has extensive training and experience, there are many people who will take you, not all will be safe.

What do I need?
This section assumes that you are just getting into the sport and the people you are going with will have ropes, webbing and the equipment to create anchors.
One note on the equipment, remember everything will get trashed. It will be drug along rocks, down cliffs, through sand and rivers, dropped, etc. If you don't want it ruined, don;t bring it.
  1. Harness - We don't recommend buying them used, there are many decent harnesses for 50 - 60 dollars. If you are canyoneering it is going to get trashed.
  2. At least one Locking Carabiner - Smooth round ones will allow you to rappel more efficiently.
  3. Belay device - An ATC or Figure 8 will work the best. We use ATCs because they won't twist the rope.
  4. Helmet - 50-60 dollars to protect your head from falling items.**Note, some do not use Helmets when rappelling, it only takes one close call to see why they are needed.
  5. Gloves - Durable. Some use leather (more expensive *20-40 dollars*, last longer for rappelling but do not grip the rocks as well) and some use the ones with a rough plastic coating (cheaper *2-6 dollars*, don't last as long for rappelling, better at gripping rocks)
  6. Shoes - They will get trashed. A pair of trail running shoes with the material recessed a bit works great.
  7. Backpack - Hauling gear, slightly bigger ones work better.
